Checking in from North Carolina

Hey y'all! I know I promised I was going to start blogging again and then I went and dropped off the face of the planet without a word. Sorry about that! It's been a whirlwind of a month and things are finally starting to settle down.

We left San Diego on February 10th and made our way to North Carolina after a brief visit in Texas. I was SO anxious to get here and see our house. Now we've been here a little over a month and we are slowly settling in.

The girls did pretty well on the long journey but it took them a few weeks to settle down and get back into a routine. I started Emerson is preschool the week after we arrived and she is loving it. She goes 5 mornings a week, which has been a bit of an adjustment, but she is learning so much.
I've been pretty busy with house stuff and I haven't really gotten out there and started trying to make friends. That's probably one of the hardest parts about moving. Luckily I do still have a few friends here from when we lived here before and it has been fun to reconnect! We also lucked out with some friendly neighbors and they all have little girls! Emerson and Adelyn have had a blast playing outside every afternoon. We live on a cup-de-sac that gets very little traffic and they are able to ride bikes and scooters safely. I love it!! I can say without a doubt that we finally feel like we are home and we are truly loving being back. It's such an amazing feeling after feeling so unsettled for all of those years. I hope we are able to stay here for a LONG time!

Now, back to the house. You guys, I was SO nervous when we went to get the keys. Like I mentioned before, we hadn't seen the house in 5 years and we had had several different tenants during that time. We had also had a pretty bad experience with our property management company so I was pretty much expecting the worst. Luckily, my fears were unfounded. The house was in pretty good shape despite needing a good cleaning. Everything that needs to be done is purely cosmetic and would probably be the case even if we had lived here all this time.

Our first order of business was getting the entire interior repainted. We painted all of the walls ourselves when we bought the house 9 years ago and I honestly didn't like a single color that we had. Think lots of chocolate browns, golden beige, and dark red. I loved it at the time we did it but didn't want to live with it much longer. We had also used flat paint throughout the house so there were lots of scuffs and marks on the walls. We thought about trying to do it ourselves for about a second, but after getting a quote from a painting company we knew that was the way to go. It took a small chunk out of my decorating budget but it was SO worth it. Most of the house is Accessible Beige by Sherwin Williams. The living room and kitchen are Balanced Beige and it's just a shade darker. I love that everything is nice and neutral and I'm really happy with both colors. It allows me to change up our decor without worrying about having to repaint.
Here are some BEFORES:

Be on the lookout for AFTERS as I finish each room! :)

Besides painting, we also need to do some fence repairs, have the house pressure washed, and work on the landscaping. There will also be some updates that will need to be done but that will just have to happen over time.

Our biggest project so far was taking up the carpet in our living room and replacing it with wood look tile. It was a HUGE job and my amazing hubby did it all himself! It's honestly worth of it's own post so look for that soon!

I haven't made much progress in the decorating department because I'm pretty much starting from scratch. I've gotten rid of most of what we had and slowly trying to find new decor and furniture pieces to get the look I really want. It's also happening on a limited budget so there has been lots of Craigslist stalking! :) I actually really enjoy repurposing things and the thrill of the hunt is pretty fun too. I can't wait to share some pictures of our rooms as they come together.

Well, I guess that's enough rambling for now. I know I keep saying this, but I really do plan on coming back and making blogging more of a priority. I love sharing our story on this little blog and I'm going to do my best to do it more regularly.
